Arrive as early as possible
I can’t stress this enough please arrive a couple of minutes early for your check-in. Showing up a few minutes early will allow you to get ahead of the group you are with.
Bring Your Own Dolly
This is something that I wish I had for move-in day. This would have made our life so much easier. The school will provide you a tub to bring in your dorm stuff but sometimes there are not any available so I highly recommend buying a dolly.
don't forget command Strips and batteries
It's for the two things that I completely forgot about that you need. Most colleges have the rule of not putting holes on the wall. To avoid any damages purchase some command strips for your room. Then you never know when you may need batteries.
Clean the Room Before Moving in
Bring some cleaning supplies so you can clean the dorm before you move in because you don't know who was in there before you moved in and rather be safe than sorry.
unpack in sections
Unpacking in sections will allow you to have an understanding of where you want everything in your room that's why it's important to label your boxes so you can put the boxes where it needs to go. Before you start unpacking set up your furniture first so then you can utilize the space.
Don't forget to bring tools so you can build your furniture or hang up things.
Check for damage
Before you move in completely and check the room if there are any damages or paint missing that you need to report before you move in. Check for any damage on walls, furniture, windows, doors, etc. and take pictures of any damage you find. They will charge you if there's any damages in the room after you move out if you didn't report it.
Move in day is a great way to meet new people. Introduce yourself to your neighbors and resident assistant. Because first impression means everything and these are the people that you are going to be with for the next year. You never know that they might become your friends or give you helpful college advice.
Please be kind to whoever is helping you. I know that moving and can be extremely stressful so there's no need to get in a bad mood with them when they're helping you.! They are also very stressed so just appreciate this f time that you have with them for a while.
One thing that I did wish that I did during my move-in day was to bring snacks because we were extremely hungry halfway through.
Wait to the end to shop
If you forgot something wait to the end to go back to the store and get the things. In the end, you can create a list of what you forgot.
grocery shop When you get there
I went grocery shopping once I got there because that will save so much room in your car for you to bring other things instead of food. You can get food anywhere.
Ship To Store
If you're coming from out-of-state one thing that I love that some stores do like Target, Walmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond are that they allow you to buy online and pick it up on move-in day so that you won't be stressed shopping the day of.
divide and conquer
Another college move-in day tip is divide and conquer. Have designated roles for each of your family members on what they should be doing during the move-in day. So it can go as quickly and as smoothly as possible. For example, if you have furniture have someone focus on putting it together.
